Is it possible to have a very mild case of bipolar. Can it get worse? And what do they mean when people say "racing mind?"

I was just diagnosed as "BiPolar 2 - cyclothymic" at age 50. Finally, I understand so very much about myself. I thought I just had "mood swings" and was down due to menopause ^ losing my Dad 2 years ago. Yes, my mind "races" sometimes - and that's when I'm usually most creative too! I'd suggest you find a reaaly good psych doc who understands meds - I'm only taking Topomax - it's made all the difference for me! Good Luck!

Bipolar can range from mild to severe. There is a huge spectrum of bipolar folks. I have bipolar. I do not however stay up for days at a time, or think that I am invincible or accomplish amazing feats and then go into depressive states so bad that I am about to kill myself or anyone else. I do get depressed and do have unusually good feelings about my life sometimes. These can even happen within the same day. SO YES you can have a mild form of bipolar and without assistance it CAN become worse. It is best to get help asap. Its ALSO best to take the meds and continue to do so for the rest of your life. I did not find out til I was 39 that I was bipolar. I see it as having stronger feelings than most people do and finding ways of tempering my reaction to things so that I stay within normal limits of how I respond to things. Kind of vague I know. lets see, example, my freind says that she thinks I talk to harshly to my kid. This pisses me off. Matter fact I am really angry that she says this to me so I have to wait until I am calm enough to talk about it without crying or yelling about it to her. THATS what its like to have a mild case of bipolar...

Yes, it is possible to have a mild case of bipolar. But if you have a "racing mind" (jumps from one thing to another, difficult to focus on anything) it is also possible that you have adult ADHD. Both of these conditions can be helped with the right medications. See your doctor for diagnosis and for treatment.

My definition of mild bipolar would be Cyclothymia.

'Cyclothymia is a chronic, but less extreme, form of bipolar disorder that consists of short periods of depression alternating with short periods of hypomania. The onset of each phase is separated by short periods of normal mood. This diagnosis is excluded if the patient has had either a manic episode or a major depressive episode.

This disorder is a milder form of bipolar II disorder consisting of recurrent mood disturbances between hypomania and dysthymic mood.'

Every normal human could be described as having a "mild" form of bi-polar disorder. Highs and lows--yearly, monthly, weekly, even daily are completely normal, and more often under the age of 22.

there are two types of bipolar, type I and type II- type II being the less severe and then theres cyclothmia- exactly the same symptoms as bipolar but less severe again and it negatively affects your life to a much lesser degree. look it up on the internet.
But remember, everyone feels highs and lows and there is a big variation on what is considered normal
