Copper mines have had a bad record when it comes to the environment. Nearby streams have been turned into lifeless things by toxic amounts of the metal and sediments flowing down them, and the soils of the areas where tailings (waste/slag) are dumped have proven infertile. There are some bacteria and plants that can manage to take up copper from the soil, but the copper is never truly destroyed, only moved around or bound up. There is also a chance that runoff water high in copper will get into the water table and therefore into people's wells, which is a public health risk.

Copper last a long time and without chemicals to complicate the picture it has served us well.
