He used to be bright, curious and funny. Now he's a drone who can't think for himself. How can we bring him back to reality?

D... Do you honestly think there are no repercussions for a christian who leaves the herd? Puh-leaze.

I had this happen to a friend of mine - smart as hell but with a hole in his psyche that he tried everything to fix: shrinks, Dale Carnegie, Primal Scream, Silva Mind Control and anything else that was going.
I always feared that one day the God cult would get him, and it happened. The next time I called him he answered the phone with 'Hello? Jesus loves you!', and I knew they'd eaten his head.
Unlike all the other cults he'd tried, these people give you a complete reality transplant. He simply forgot everything he'd previously known about how the world works, and dropped into the zombie mode you describe.
Sometimes you just have to give up on them and walk away. Look ahead to the day we hang the last priest in the rubble of the last cathedral.

This isn't really an answer, but I'm curious about why you think that someone you describe as "bright & courious" couldn't possibly have looked into the Christian religion and decided that he belived what he saw? Studying something and deciding that it is true does not make one "a drone who can't think for himself". While I do know some Christians (and some athiests) who fall into that category, I wouldn't say that of most of any group.

Give us more details. What kind of cult is he involved in? Do they have a name?
Calvary Chapel is bad news. Many people have left them because they are legalistic, abusive, and they intrude upon the personal lives of their members. Here's a link for you. Hope this helps:

how can you call the foundational belief system that founded this country and is the crux of our rights and freedom a cult?
cults deny freedom of choice, especially the right to leave and seperate without possible repurcussion..simply choosing to be a christian is based on the right of choice with the right to leave...

Schizoid delusional mental disorder can often be treated with zyprexa (use only as directed , see a doctor). Take your friend to a psychiatrist. He can probably be treated.

would you rather be in a cult full of God fearing christians or an occult devil based religion? Who says he has to think for himself. seems to me we have way too many free thinkers who have no clue.

I'd suggest go to church with him for awhile and see what happens.
Maybe you should have a reality check.
