I think the same mysteriuos hand that shaves the Gilligan's Island crew and applies make up to the women and styles their hair and launders and irons their clothing must be the culprit!! ;o)

Some guys just can't grow beards...but most likely the reason was that beards make men look too threatening or unkempt. Not too many heroes have beards if you notice. With a beard, the person looks like they have something to hide, and it also ages the person. Tarzan always had to look fit and youthful. The character first came to screen back in the 1940's I believe, and the smooth face just stayed as the norm...kind of when Coca Cola created the face of Santa Claus--how we see him today (white beard/red suit).

If we saw a bunch of women from the jungle tribes and kingdoms flocking all over him, I don't think he would be good at heart. Having lots of women would eventually make him a barbarian type. Causing him to grow a beard.
