I recently, while sitting at home in my living room, had my hit by a hit and run driver as it was parked in front of my home. My friend had seen this happen and told me so I took chase after the perp. After about a 3 mile chase I convinced the guy to return to the scene of the crime so he did.
A motor officer was dispatched to the scene and I don't know if he just did not want to be there or what. He let the guy go without so much as a verbal warning or citation. I about flipped. You mean to tell me I can hit and run something and nothing will be done about it? Where is the justice?

He must have gotten a ticket for the accident itself and I'm sure an accident report was taken! If not you got screwed. I'm a cop and was involved in a hit and run accident in my home town while driving my personal vehicle. The guy appeared drunk and I tried to chase him while on the phone with my dispatcher eventually I had to let him go because he blew out my right side tires when he pushed me into the curb causing the accident. I had one of our lazy guy's show up and he asked me if I wanted to file an accident report ($8,000.00 worth of damage) he never attempted to contact the surrounding towns and did not include the offending vehicle in the report. I had to go down there the next day and straighten things out including advising his shift commander on how this guy handled the call. So if you feel this was wrong you need to get down there and speak with his supervisor. However, like I said if he was ticketed for bring at fault in the accident and not drunk, in my state we can not write a ticket for hit and run (leaving the scene of a property damage accident if he returned to the scene with or without yourself in a few minutes time.

Is there anything else that did or did not occur. My specific concern would be if the officer was able to provide you with the information concerning the other driver enabling you to file an insurance claim.

As strange as it may sound, my own state allows 30 days for a driver to report an accident if not the owner and 10 days by the owner.

In your case, the officer cannot issue a ticket for any violation as he did not witness the accident. Some agencies restrain from issuing a summons even if the officer did observe the accident allowing the insurance companies to fight it out!

I wouldn't blame the department but the officer. There will always be a bad seed, lazy officer, something in every department. Fresno has a high crime rate so in the realm of things, this man hitting a parked car isn't high up on his list.
However, it is important to you (as it would be to me too) so it did warrant attention.

You can always file a complaint with the department.. not sure what will come of it.
Hope the guy had insurance!

Let me help to ease your dismay. A while back I hired 2 kids to work in my yard, when I came home my neighbor said they climbled in the bathroom window, so I looked around and noticed $2000.00 had been taken from a can way inside my closet, (I didn't have a bank account at the time) I called the police, they talked to my neighbor and then talked to the kids and told me there was nothing they could do, when I asked him why he told me........."BECAUSE THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T DO IT" Talk about your high tech well educated police work and they wonder why no one respects the law. That was in yuma arizona by the way.
