How this whole thing about who goes to heaven and who doesn't works. It seems to me, that often the criteria for entry is based on random birth circumstance more than anything, i.e. if you are born and raised in a Christian environment or have been exposed to the Christian options you hold the trump cards. How does this work if we are all born equal or are all gods children

Salvation is a free gift. People can't handle that. We all want to work our way into heaven but we can,t. If we had to work our way into heaven it wouldn't be fair. Money, strength, intelligence, health would be a few of the factors effecting salvation. God made it a free gift so everyone could receive it.

If you are born into a Christian family, you do have an advantage, when it comes to what the Bible says about salvation. However, you are not saved until you confess your personal belief in Jesus Christ. Your parents' salvation will not save you. And there are many, many people who have been raised in Christian homes who have not accepted their parents' beliefs. Conversely, there are many, many people raised in non-Christian homes who have accepted Christ. God knows how to reach people. He really does know what He's doing. We have to trust Him. The Bible says that the gospel will be preached to the ends of the earth, and then the end will come. Believe.

Well answered Robert, we do not gain Heaven by our own merits it is pure gift, we can however by faithfully following Jesus be quite sure that we will not be in Hell for eternity.
Hell is the place for those who totally reject the salvation that Christ offered and who by their actions and lifestyle show only contempt for God.

The criteria for getting into heaven include some mutually exclusive criteria, as well as some criteria that almost no one has ever acheived:

I am a Christian, and I was raised in a Christian home, nevertheless, I work with addicts in a Christian rehab, most of whom knew nothing about God until coming into our center.
Their lives are transformed by God, as they realise that God has the answer to their deliverance from addiction.

God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. - The Bible

God provides sufficient grace to all, whether they know him, or not, and whether we cooperate with God's (usually) subtle urgings is up to each one of us.

The large number of fallen away Christians shows that even those who are richly blessed can foolishly reject God's gifts.

And so far as all being God's children ... we're NATURAL children perhaps ... but until we're reconciled with God through his son Jesus, typically through baptism into his church, we're estranged and separated from him, and are not yet heirs to all that he wishes to share with us.
