Because it is human nature to act as sheep... it is very hard to free up from the sheep's mentality (religions are a big example). Life is a form of energy, so is the food we eat and so is Earth (it lives longer than man, but it dies as well).

Energy is wasted in wars (as wars mars earth and human lives get wasted)... it would have been so much better if man is smart enough to focus their energy on science and technology that keeps earth healthier a while longer and finding another planet that human species can thrive on after earth is gone.

You ask the question of the ages; why do people fight?

Historically speaking wars occur for two basic reasons:

1. Economic: The tribe #1 needs food and the other tribe #2 has food. Now there are also 2 variations on this theme
A) Tribe #1 tries to bargain for food and tribe #2 tells them to drop dead
B) Tribe #1 decides it will be easer and cheaper to take rather than pay for the food.

2. Political/Religious/Philosophical: How ever you call it this war is caused by a belief that Tribe #1 has the "Right" to beat the snot out of tribe #2. This so called "Right" could be religiously inspired as with Mohamed and the Moslems or politically inspired as with the Soviet Union but where ever this "Right" to conquer comes from it is not inspired by need or greed but rather by the sure knowledge that the attacker is the holder of the and therefore has the obligation to force others to see this truth. This fellow does not need to compete in the market place of ideas. They KNOW what is correct. They despise democracy, freedom of speech and any norms other than their own. They kill indiscriminately and blame their actions on their opponents.

So where does that leave the balance of humanity, you know tribe #2. The fellows who have to clean up after the Pearl Harbor's and the 9/11's? What would the world have us do? Today many would say (as they do with 9/11) well America suck it up. You deserve it because you are rich and they are not. You practice "cultural imperialism" etc, etc. AND, since you are not pure you have no right to protect yourself from those who would attack you. Now this feeling is also there when any western country defends itself against those who would destroy it. It is at the heart of the opposition to the Iraq war (that some how America deserves to be destroyed or at least hurt badly). But that still leaves the question what would you have Tribe #2 do when they are attacked? Life may be short but Slavery can make it a lot longer seeming.

Maybe sometimes it is not just OK to fight back; Maybe sometimes it is necessary.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." John Stewart Mill

"Then out spake brave Horatius,
The Captain of the Gate:
'To every man upon this earth,
Death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his Gods?'"

Wars should be the last solution. Peaceful solutions to problems should be tried every time first.

Because all that is necessary for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.

There are evil people hell bent on destroying modern civilization and all they consider infidels. What do you suggest? Sit on our butts and wait for them to behead us and our children?

You either fight them or you are enabling them.

The American tradition is that life without liberty is no life at all. "Give me liberty or give me death". We choose to live free or die trying.
