Karate is a Japanese martial art (since Okinawa is now part of Japan but originally as a Okinawan Martial Art) but it has root in Okinawa and China. Okinawans first practice it in a form of a traditional art called te, some/most techniques of Karate are also been borrowed in Chinese Martial Arts because okinawan's trade with such people. Originally "Kara-te" means "Kara" as China and "te" as hand but the Okinawans master change it to "Kara" that means Empty and the "te" as hand. What i have known is that they only change the first character of the Japanese alphabet used to it. You can further read it at www.wikipedia.org and search it there and at www.karate.org.yu.

Good Luck at your training.

Karate does mean 'empty hand' in Japanese, but the answer is far more complex than that. The art of karate has Chinese origins. For more information, refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karate

Karate is an Okinawan Art, NOT Japanese. Your success depends on how well your teacher understands his art. And this applies to any art.

Karate is a Japanese form of martial arts and means "empty hand" in Japanese. Chinese have different terms for martial arts. "Wu shu" literally means "martial arts" and is taught in Red China now.

空手 (Karate) is originated from Japan. Its actually a developed martial art from Ryukyu fighting methods and kempo (Chinese).

Until 1935, "karate" was written as "唐手" (Chinese hand). But in 1935, the masters of the various styles of Okinawan karate conferred to decide a new name for their art. They decided to call their art "karate" written in Japanese characters as "空手" (empty hand).
