the military?Since what a person believes in seems to dictate whether or not someone who does not believe as they do and lives a life that their belief says is a "sin" can be treated equally without discrimination for who they are. And, so, if the rule of law is that religious morality dictates the law of the land on certain matters, should not my moral objection to the sin of Christianity according to my beliefs be treated as reason enough to start banning their right to marriage and other rights?

While you make a fair point, you seem to assume that all Christians believe in a ban on gays in the military. We don't. Personally, I couldn't care less. It's just that many of the soldiers DO care, and the "don't ask, don't tell" policy makes things easier in that aspect. I wouldn't want homosexuals to be singled out for discrimination, would you? You don't think that's what would happen? I'm afraid it would. Therefore I don't believe homosexuals should OPENLY (and that is the key word) serve in the military.
As for gay marriage, I do have mixed feelings about it, but it has NOTHING to do with it being a "sin." I realize that not everyone believes that it is a sin. On one hand, I understand that homosexuals want the right to be committed to the person they love for life. I understand that they desire to have equal rights. Absolutely. But on the other hand, I think it would open the door to other things. If two men or two women can get married, then why not two cousins? A brother and a sister? How about a man to seven different women? The same argument can be used to legalize those as can be used for legalizing same-sex marriage.
There are some out there who say that stuff (incest, bigamy, polygamy) SHOULD be legal. I don't think so. Marriage should remain as it's been: A mostly religious institution, in which ONE man and ONE woman who are not related make a lifetime commitment to one another.

The next question is, should there be an actual BAN on same-sex marriage? I don't believe there should be. It's a very bad sign, I think, when we HAVE to make certain things illegal. That would be like banning divorce (excepting cases of abuse and adultery, of course, and a few other extenuating circumstances), when we should KNOW that divorce is bad for society.
I'm babbling, and I digress.

No, one's beliefs should NOT be enough to ban certain behaviors. What's better for society, however, SHOULD be.
Now I know that people aren't going to like my answer, and that's fine. What's great about the U.S. is that we're all entitled to our own beliefs.

Every religion shares one basic truth: they all believe there is a right religion. Every religion believes there is one way that is the truest way. Every religion believes there is a good place or state to go to after one has died. And every religion believes there is a bad place or state to go after one has died. So Christianity is not alone in this. Indeed, I would say that since all religions believe that there is an ultimate best way THEN that common believe is the true belief. The question then follows: Which is the true path? Atheists, however, have decided to opt out of the entire spiritual conversation by saying there is no right way, that man is only what one sees, that in the past, future, present, in all space and in all time God has never existed, will never exist and does not exist. It's very hard to prove a negative...especially a negative that is so all-encompassing. How do I know that an elephant doesn't exist on some small planet in the crab nebula? So there is a certain arrogance with Atheism.

As for the idea of sin. Again, there is a certain "tao" of sin. All religions generally believe the ten commandments. And all religions generally believe that homosexuality is wrong. There might be a few -- such as Native American spirituality-- which accepts homosexuality. But generally, homosexuality is not something that only Christians call a sin.

The only way Christianity differs from other religions regarding sin is that it states that God is so pure and good and holy that humans can never attain to the perfection God calls for. Christianity states that if a "good" human or a human institution could get his hands on God he would kill God. Therefore Christianity declares that since humans cannot be good, God created a substitute -- himself-- to be righteous for them. Then any one who simply asks God to be merciful to them for JEsus sake will go to heaven. So whereas in another religion I would go to hell or be reincarnated because of falling short...in Christianity humans have already fallen short, the thing is to cling to Mercy.

As for homosexuality, most of the gays I know had devastating childhoods. Rapes, etc. So I keep out of that argument entirely. I don't think people are born gay, I don't think people choose their orientation either.

As for military, the Bible speaks of a holy spiritual war....a war in which one renews one's mind against the things of the world. The idea of political and national military wars stem from the Islamic idea of Jihad which slowly made its way into Christianity when the Crusaders picked up the Islamic idea of holy wars. Before Islam Christianity had no such idea of national and military secular wars being holy or unholy.

Many western atheists and agnostics are woefully ignorant about the religions of other worlds and even of Christianity.

No, cos the law is not based on religion. it is there to insure that society funtions properly. it is a set of rules for everyone regardless of any religion. the point of the law is to be objective and nonbiased whereas religion is subjective. By the saem token any chriatian person can say you should be banned for your practises and veiws. The constitution which the law is bound by states that all ppl have the right to be treated fairly and with dignity.

First of all- true christianity is not a religion- religions are man-made like yours.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
John 3:6 (KJV)

Religion is born of the flesh- the nature of the flesh is wicked, so it figures from there that religion does not get you any closer to salvation- in fact further.

So you are asking the wrong question my friend. True christianity is God-made, the one true God (father of Jesus Christ).

Oh no! Just as gay people are starting to win the right to get married (I am gay), you want to deny me the right to get married because I am a Christian. I wonder when people will start seeing the truth, that God does not oppose gay marriage even though the religious right wants Him to.

Yes, I do get the point of your question and I do understand you are not advocating banning Christian marriage.

The main problem with Christians is that they raise christian children. Children have a right not to have their minds addled with nonsense, and we as a society have a duty to protect them from it. So we should no more allow parents to teach their children to believe, for example, in the literal truth of the Bible or that the planets rule their lives, than we should allow parents to knock their children's teeth out or lock them in a dungeon
