In my search for a hair colour and style that assists me to look my best, I am always encountering hairdressers that don't listen to my information and requests. To them, it's all about the latest innovations and "looks"; to me, it's about what works best for MY look. A particular stylist may have 25 plus years hairdressing experience (it's usually more like 25 months!), but I've had my hair much longer than they've been qualified, and because I take an active interest in my hair treatment, I know just as much, if not more, about how my hair reacts, why it behaves that way, and what makes it look the best for MY style and looks. If I am knowledgable and am familiar with products and techniques that work on my hair, why can't I have that procedure? Why do I have to do what the hairdresser wants to do?

A good hair stylist will do what you want - but it sounds like you might switch around a lot. It does take time to know a person's hair. Color theory and styling experience are important, but sometimes situations defy what we are taught. I believe you should find a salon with a good reputation and find a stylist that listens. Tell them your situation and let them know what you want - show them pictures (of yourself with a certain hair style you've had, or with pictures from magazines or the internet, etc.) explain what you normally do with your hair and how you would like to maintain your style.

For example if the current trend leans towards straight hair and you want curls - let the stylist know.

If the current trend is carmel highlights but you want bleach blonde all over let the stylist know that too.

Just say "This is what I want." Don't start off with "How do you think I would look with...?"

A stylist cannot always do what you want due to certain limitations - for example if you have baby fine hair she cannot give you a head full of hair - I am sure you realize this.

Just stick with a stylist more than once and see if that helps. You might have hair that is a little difficult to work with. Or - you might seem like you need help making a decision with what you want - and when that happens LOOK OUT because it's usually an invitation for a stylist to get creative! Communication is important!

One more hint... you might want to consider a beauty school for hair services. The teacher oversees the processes the students are performing and the students are eager to give you what you want. That way you have not just one stylist but two working toward what you want to achieve.

Hope this helps!!

1) The first answer is correct bring a photo to show the hair dresser exactly what you have in mind.

2) You may know how your hair behaves & what you want but ask yourself if it is a current style, age appropriate and the most flattering hair cut for your face shape?

3) Developing a good working relationship depends on clear communication & mutual respect. Try to check out the vibe of a salon, ask friends for recommendations/referrals, book a consultation to check the stylist out & arrive early so you can observe him/her @ work.

Also, start w/ something minimal - like a trim or shaping. Then progress as you start to feel more comfortable. Ask the stylist for his/her input to consider for the next appointment.

You dont. I think your answer is to keep trying hairdressers. Unfortunately what you may have to do is find someone with a really good international rep to maintain, pay a fortune and take photos of you at your best with the style and colours you like best. It took me years to find the right hairdresser and Ive been with him for well over 20 years. He has seen me through more hairstyles than I can remember, helped me through hair loss due to chemo, and nursed my mop back to life after it was all over. Three years later I have the best locks in the world. He has encouraged me to try different things, and after a few horrors we have the mix just about right. He changes my look to suit the seasons, and here in the Land of Aus the harsh sunlight and ocean breezes cause damage. Let me know how you go. Be patient, but dont take what they dish out, its your hair not theirs. xx

All I can say is that passionate hair stylist are artistic kind of people. Meaning that no matter what you say, as an independent artist, they are usually compelled to follow their own vision or add their own flare to whatever you have already envisioned for yourself.

Good luck next time...

Tip. they are visual people. Try bringing in a photo of what you desire. Better yet a photo of yourselve with the cut, color, or so on that you really loved. its better then trying to describe it. Otherthan that, i say you are just getting cheap hair cuts. 12.99 will look like 12.99 and make you feel 12.99 ya get the drift. Spring for a great hair cut or color, might make your pocket lil smaller but will ultimately get what you want. And bring a photo. everyone describes things differnetly. They are trying, help them help you. Otherwise shave it off, or do it better yourself.

I know, this always happened to me with cuts and colours. i bring in pictures of exactly how i want my hair, and then i look like the guy that just walked out too, and he looked like the guy before him. ive asked for all over blonde hair, and i walk out with just streaks. I found what works is just simply saying i want this and this done, and if they try to give there imput just say "No thank you, id like it exactly how i stated". dont give them the chance to try change it
