Little brat, got away from us last weekend!! Seems like he does this every spring, and no, he is not fixed!! My bf doens
't believe in that!! Needless to say, I took the blame and got the ticket. I know a dog at large is not a good thing, problem is we share our yard with two other dog owners, and it's not fenced. He listens to his"daddy" but not to me . Guess he can tell I'm a pansy!! What to do?? I know we need to put up a fence this summer, because sharing a yard with other male dogs is not good!! You take your eyes off him for even a second and he is gone!! What a brat!!

hunniebu... it's the by-law officers that gave me the ticket, and it's a $100 dollar fine!! If anyone's dog gets caught deficating on someone elses property that is and even bigger fine. Here where I live that is a 250$ fine!!!

A dog at large, pretty much means exactly that!! If he ran away and caused any accidents, I am totally liable!! He may or not be good around traffic, the dog catcher told me he is really bad about that. We live in the city, so it is scarey when he gets loose. I never want to have to call city road mateniance and find out he was road kill!! Did I help you understand? There is alot more to dog ownership than just having it and letting it out once in a while!!

Who cares what the boyfriend thinks, it's better for the dog to be neutered, and these things would be less likely to happen... Also fighting with other males in your community backyard is likely to become a problem.. Think of the dog and his health, and forget what the boyfriend with the problem thinks... Men are stupid when it comes to not wanting to get their dogs fixed... They think it's a reflection on them.. If he will miss his dog's testicles that much, tell him to get neuticles put in the dog, then he'll still have his testicles but won't be impregnating other dogs in the neighbourhood..

If you are the one bearing the legal responsibilities of the dog (ie. getting the tickets, paying for vet visits etc), then you should be the one to make the decision as to whether the dog is neutered for one thing.

Neutering will help to eliminate some behavioral problems, but it's downright dangerous for your dog to just run around like that. Not only because of breeding, but because he may get hit by a car, poisoned or seriously injured in one way or another.

If you want the dog to listen to you, you will have to establish yourself as an alpha or leader of the pack. Try going to obedience classes with the dog to work on behavioral problems.

You also should be on par with your boyfriend about these decisions. You need to have a long talk about what's going on, because it seems like he is not including you in his personal decisions, and your difference in behavioral strategies/techniques will only confuse the dog in the longrun.

So in short:
- Talk with your boyfriend and find ways you can both compromise
- Put up that fence
- Consider getting the dog neutered
- Go to behavioral classes

- Don't let your dog wander around the yard until you have a fence up. Keep your dog on a leash in order to prevent injury, and further problems in the future.

Hope this helps!

The boyfriend needs to come to his senses and get the dog neutered before something more serious happens . so what if he does not believe in that . take the dog and get him neutered and then the b/f cant do anything about that . What is done is done . what is he going to leave you if you take the dog and get him neutered ? if he does then he is not worth having . I got a ticket once for my dog running loose on the beach and he was very friendly and did not bite anyone . but still got a ticket . He got away from me and started running on the beach and that is a 75.00 fine . needless to say i was upset . i tried to explain what happened but the animal control officer did not want to hear it . of course .

My mom would get "dog at large" tickets all the time. You know sometimes it's the neighbors who call the police in the first place and if you keep letting this happen ..the neighbors could possibly do something to your dog.: this is what happened to my mom ..Don't let this happen to you.
