Both cameras are good. The XT has more megapixels, but you'd only notice a slight difference in prints larger than 8x10 inches. I suggest you buy whichever camera feels best in your hands.
If you already have Nikon lenses, getting a Nikon dSLR seems obvious. There are two important things to consider however:
* With the D40 and D40X, Nikon economized on the auto-focus system to reduce the cost price. These two cameras only work properly with Nikon's AF-S and AF-I lenses. Other models, such as the discontinued Nikon D50 and D70, and the new D80 work with all Nikon AF lenses.
* All Nikon dSLR bodies effectively magnify your lenses by a factor 1.5. For example, a 28-70mm zoom will appear to be 42-105mm (multiply everything by 1.5). The same is true for the Canon XT, which has a 1.6 multiplier, but when you start from scratch you can take this into account when getting lenses.

Between the Nikon D40 and Canon Rebel XT, I'd say go with Nikon. The reason being is that the Nikon has several years more of technology over the XT, better build, better image quality, and better a LCD. Even though the D40 will only AF with AF-S lenses, these are the way of the future for Nikon.

Well yes, but the only problem is, can you handle the D40? If you think the XT is small, boy the D40 is even smaller than that. So just to warn you about that. But you might want to consider buying the 18-200mm from Nikon for a travel lens if your going with the D40 just because manuel is so not the best thing for travel lenses.

1. D40 will only autofocus with AF-S lenses.
2. Both cameras are intended for the hands of a 7-year-old child.
3. If you look at what's hot in photojournalism, you'll see wide-angle everywhere, so plan on getting 10-20 or 12-24
