Putting on the Armor of God means to fight back evil with saying or doing God's will ! Like saying a Verse from the Bible that God said ! Trusting God is an Armor you have, When you rember bible verses and use them when you need them is an Armor of God. You are protected when you use the Armor of God, When you read the bible and remember God's words at times when something bad is going to happen or has happend and you repent Gods word in your mind then you are using the Armor of God against the bad. So really i think the bible is our armor of God ! when you have faith in God you have his words which is your protection( your Armor)! This is how i understand it anyway !

When Paul wrote about the Armor of God he was sitting in a roman jail cell becausae of his beliefs. As he was writing to the Ephesians he had a roman guard watching over him. The idea of the armor of God was inspired by the armor of the prison guard. It is a very nice metaphore of how we should live our lives.
Gird your loins with thruth...truth is the first thing we need to have
breastplate of righteousness to protect our hearts from sin
shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace so we can go forth spreading Gods word
shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one.
the helmet of salvation to guard our minds from unsound doctrine
and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God with which we attack sin and untruth in this world.
Put on the whole armor to prect yourself from the temptations of this world and to spread Gods truth.

Trying to do it formally is exactly the kind of error Satan wants you to fall into. Just think how many things you'd have to do each day if you consciously went through with every piece of advice in the Bible.
You'd be praying without ceasing (no sleep then), asking, knocking, considering all scripture, discerning the spirits, making sure above all that you love God and the brethren, rejoicing, taking communion all the time because we'd be remembering Him, putting on armour...
Tired, dazed and confused. And without an extra iota of righteousness or protection because we'd done it all our own way without consulting Him in prayer (deep prayer whence comes spiritual guidance).

Get your bible honey, write that scripture about putting on the armor of God and every morning when you wake up speak it out!! Say it everyday! We need to do this so we can protect ourselves from the enemy's arrows!
Its no metaphor, it's a weapon against Satan and his lieing demons.
God be with you!

The armor you ask about is the knowledge of gods word . and wisdom is knowing gods word. Read God's word and know it. It is you protection against the fiery darts (lies) of Satan. If you are familiar with gods word it will be easier to know when satan is twisting gods word to further his bs. Have you known anybody on this forum to knowingly misquote the bible. A prime example.

It's a way of life.
with the belt of truth buckled around your waist - be truthful
with the breastplate of righteousness in place - do what is right
with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace - always be ready for the Lord
take up the shield of faith - believe
Take the helmet of salvation - Know Jesus is your Savior
and the sword of the Spirit - Know your Bible

It is as real as you are alive.
If we are to be delivered from the Devil, we must wage spiritual warfare against the wicked spirit forces. Victory in the face of such odds depends on our wearing “the complete suit of armor from God.” (Ephesians 6:11-18)
For continued protection against the wicked spirit forces, we need, among other things, to read and study God’s Word regularly.—Philippians 4:8.
Regular participation in Christian meetings equips us to proclaim the good news of God’s Kingdom.
“The sword of the spirit, that is, God’s word,” is indispensable in warding off false teachings and “overturning strongly entrenched things.”
We “oppose the Devil” by adhering to Bible standards and truths and by taking a firm stand against him. The world is in harmony with Satan because he is its god. (2Â Corinthians 4:4)
We therefore reject the world’s traits, such as pride, selfishness, immorality, violence, and materialism. We know that the Devil fled when Jesus resisted his attack by using the Scriptures during the temptation in the wilderness. (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10, 11)
Likewise, Satan will ‘flee from us’ in defeat if we are in full submission to Jehovah and prayerfully rely on Him. (Ephesians 6:18) With the support of Jehovah God and his beloved Son, nobody can do us permanent harm—no, not even the Devil!—Psalm 91:9-11.

the armor of God is a spiritual armor that you wear before you go into warfare with the devil. Warfare as in fighting the devil.
