Pethedine is an opiate painkiller - like morphine but shorter acting. Phenergan is actually an antihistamine but used here to enhance the sedative effects of the pethidine and to reduce the nausea that is often caused by opiates. You were told correctly as this is a standard combination used for sedation and pain relief.

Meperidine (Pethidine) is used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Meperidine is in a class of medications called narcotic analgesics, a group of pain medications similar to morphine. It works by changing the way the body senses pain.
Please see the web pages for more details on Meperidine (Pethidine).

Pethidine is an analgesic. It is used for management of moderate to severe pain; adjunct to anesthesia and preoperative sedation.

The second drug may be Phenergan. It is used for symptomatic treatment of various allergic conditions and motion sickness, a sedative and an antiemetic.
