I think it is tradition because many years back, wedding dresses were still expensive when money was more scarce in early America and it was economical to have a wedding dress as an heirloom for a daughter or another family member. As for men renting tuxes... I think the same concept applies but since tuxes are not nearly as fancy as dresses, it's more economic to rent them than to pass them down. I'm hanging onto my wedding dress for my future children. I spent $800 on it, and I'm keeping it!
