I'm around KC, MO as well. It's 2.77/gal here. I just had to respond because I grew up in Howell and I miss my home. Your pay only went up 4% but let's be honest. The economy there sucks and you should be grateful you have a job...
PS...I miss Michigan, can I come live with you? lol.

Gas in my town is $3.09. (60 miles east of St. Louis) Gas has gone up for two reasons. First, it is a simple supply and demand thing. Second, 25% of fuel prices are based on speculation. The war in Iraq and the development of countries like China, India and Vietnam have caused a great amount of uneasiness about oil supplies. That is why there has been such great fluctuations in the price of gas.

2.96 southern Illinois. right next to a refinery.... 10 to 15 miles away in any direction gas drops to 2.65.... the answer to why is that there needs to be more refineries built.. understand there is a surplus of oil right now being pumped out of the ground but refineries are in there summer upkeep time when "turnarounds" are being done. what that means is that maintenance is being done on the refineries to keep them in operation and do repairs. There have not been any new refineries built for over 15 years in the United States. two reasons... 1) oil companies like the profits that are being made for there stock holders. 2) EPA rules and enviormental groups make it hard to build. The refinery in our area ,that I or none of my family work at, was wanting to build and they can't get steel to build. Why? To much steel is being sold to China for new refineries to process oil that was found by American Oil Companies off the coast of Cuba but enviormental groups have blocked us from drilling for. Cuba who is going to drill for this oil has reportedly entered into agreements with China to get this oil refined in China and then sell it back to the US consumers. guess what the price will be then!!! SCARY

Bout $2.88 here in East Texas. Gas went up for many reasons. Instability in oil-rich countries, natural disasters (hurricanes hitting the refineries in the Gulf), people are greedy, inflation. At least its not as bad as over in Europe.

$3.39 here in No Cal (Northern California) A couple years ago I could roll into a station, plop down a $20, fill my tank and leave with change. Now $20 doesn't even get me half a tank.
You can thank Dubbya and "Tricky" Dick Cheney for this mess!
