We have just finished building a new auditorium. We are built the set for Beauty and the Beast in the ag shop and have moved it into the hall this weekend. We open on Friday. THe fire inspector is giving a final inspection this week. Does he have the power to tell us where we can build the set (we have built the tower of Beasts room above the handicap ramps that only lead to the stage.) We are worried he may tell us to move the set which would be a disaster. Does anyone know what the jusrisdiction is or any ideas on how to keep the set as is.

yes. If you have a scene where fire is on the stage then you need to have your fire marshall attend.

The inspector always has the right to tell you to correct things because anything causing a fire hazzard can be a danger to everyone especially if God forbid something does happen. Better a couple of days before the show than the day of too! Even if you're scrambling to make corrections, at least you have some time to do it and not have to shut down or postpone the show. One note... your exit signs still have to be illuminated even if it means the audience can see some of your scene changes. That was one problem we had with the inspector. Just a heads up.

Yes, a set does need to meet fire code. Is there any way to rethink your design so that handicap ramps are not blocked? You may want to check with the local theatrical union in your town for more assistance.

Everything has to follow the fire code. Its a public safety thing.
Ive decorated for dances and been forced to revamp everything because the fire inspector said no.
So..hope for the best. And hide anything that's a violation, heheh.
