I politely said to her that as an atheist I would be unable to fulfill the duties of "godmother" in the way they were intended and that I would feel more comfortable if she found someone who was as spiritual as she is or at least spiritual at all to be named as godmother. She seems a bit miffed. Any suggestions to help smooth this over?

As a Christian Pastor ( I do not hold with the godmother/father thing) I give you a standing ovation for "standing" for what you believe in.

I only wish more Christians would "Stand" for what the Bible teaches.

Some people will try to use things like this to trap another into "obeying" what they have "agreed" to.

Do not change your stand she will get over it.

I do believe you did the right thing.

She obviously has no idea what a godmother is if she asked her best friend who never goes to church to be one.
Most people just think it's a social convention and not a commitment.

Actually...godparenting is more of a physical thing. many people take it lightly and feel as though it is an honor. It is an honor...and honorable "burden." Research it deeper on the net. Depending on what kind of person your friend is, she could be getting a free "babysitter" til the cows come home. You need to ask her what she thinks a godparent is. Chances are you are not going to want it.
