Most wedding planners say 6-8 weeks. I would send them at eight. My schedule at work is prepared 2-3 weeks before the first day of the new one, so if you wait and don't mail them until 6 weeks before the wedding, or less, I could not come!
Most people do a monthly plan, and have already worked on the plan at 6 weeks prior to a date.
And if you have an out of town guest or more, definitely send at 8 weeks. They need all the time they can get to arrange travel, and work.
Ask for the RSVPs to be back to you at least a week before your vendors have to have the final count. So if the florist says he had to know how many table arrangements you need, final count, by 1 week before the wedding, give your guests a 2 week notice. That way, you have at least a week to call the stragglers, and get them to decide if they will be there, or not.

Mail the invitations out 7-8 weeks prior to the wedding date...

Ask for RSVP's to be returned no later than 2 weeks prior to the wedding...

Get a shoe box or other container.. Some people will immediately send the RSVP cards back while others will lolligag around until the last minute.. With a shoe box ready you can deposit all RSVP cards into it keeping them neatly in one place until you need to do the counts for ordering catered meals etc.

Proper etiquette states that 6-8 weeks is the timeframe for mailing out wedding invitations. If people are coming from out of town, it is polite to let them know as soon as possilbe by phone, then, when the 6-8 week mark arrives, you can send them their invitation. Usually, the RSVP has a "respond by" date. People should respect this because this information is needed by the restaurant or hall that is having your reception. It is also need by YOU as it gives you a better idea on how much money you need to come up with before the big day. Good luck to you and much happiness with your marriage!

Depends on when and where the wedding is.

If its local to all guests, then two months prior send it out and have them RSVP within two weeks. Call them the day after the RSVP date if they have not responded.

If it is not local to guests, send them out an extra month or two depending on how far away they are.

If it is in a hot spot (like the outer banks of NC around June/July, very busy wedding times there) send them out as far in advance as possible so those can get hotel rooms before they are full, and can save up for the trip.

I would mail your invites especially for a summer wedding in April/May so people have time to plan their summer, especially if they need to come from out of town. I would have RSVP date for about a month before the wedding takes place.
