"Keep one thing forever in view--the truth; and if you do this, though it may seems to lead you away from the opinion of men, it will assuredly conduct you to the throne of God."

I think it's brilliant. Truth IS God. It's folly to lie to ourselves and to believe in other's lies. And illusions. You should seek to completely know yourself and the world. That is truth. Do not chase after material pleasures, simply enjoy them for what they are and recognize that there are higher things in life. That is truth. I think this is a wonderful quote, but I also think it's very hard to discover truth. I'm constantly trying to discover the truth of my own nature and can't. Maybe the highest truth is that we are all drops of God? Maybe truth is hope? I don't know...

Everyone is answering this question like God is Christian. What if he isn't? Any Muslims, Buddhists or other recognized form of religion out there want to jump in?

There are many religions on Earth, and most are convinced that all others are misguided. They all can't co-exist. Should there be any doubt that any of these systems may not be the truth, then the truth would then not be in any of their scriptures, including the Bible or Qu'ran.

In short, only science can answer the questions. But when science hits a temporary knowledge wall, then to further the cause of existence, we must believe in a leap of faith. Horace Mann can believe in whatever creator he wants, but it doesn't mean he's right.

God is truth. He demands truth from His people. The
opinion of men can lead a person anywhere (good or
bad), but the truth will set you free. The opposite from
truth is a lie. When one tells a lie, you eventually have to
tell another lie to cover up the first, and on and on it goes
until one could become a habitual liar. So, always follow
the truth which leads to Godliness despite the opinion
of men (who just might lead you astray and away from the
throne of God). Truth will put you on the right path. You'll
be glad you chose truth over men's opinions.

It makes sense. There is only one truth, Ultimate Truth. When you have found this Truth, you have found God. What Mann is saying is that in your search for God/Truth you may have to go against what others believe or think is truth. Do not be lead astray from finding (God) Truth by the ideas and persuasions of others. All true seekers or Truth will find God, because God is Ultimate Reality or Ultimate Truth. So I think that his is good advise for any true seeker.

My problem with this quote is that Truth means different things to different people, even among Christians! Assuming there are religious connotations in his quote, truth to Mann probably means following Christianity and the Bible. However, there are billions of Muslims, Hindus, and Jews who would disagree with him over his definition of truth. So in my view, this quote is very skewed toward Christianity and if so, it can only apply to Christians and not to any one who follows another faith. The "truth" for Christians and Mann is most definitely at odds with what the "truth" is for Muslims, Hindus, Jews, and atheists. Even Christians of different denominations could disagree with him over what truth is. Which means this quote has no validity for a huge number of people.

I have studied biblical issues for the past 10 years. I have studied creationism AND evolution. I have studied history. I have studied logic. And I have put all the theories I have run into to the test of truth. All my study has led me closer and closer to God because that is where all truth eventually points. People will get defiant at this statement, but no one has been able to present an unemotional and intellectual argument that stands the test of logic that would lead me away from God.

Sounds a lot like the right wing mantra! But maybe it is no longer valid. a billion dollars in right wing lying couldn't sway the majority of Americans to bring back the failed conservative agenda -- you remember -- 780,000 job losses a month, doubled unemployment rate rising rapidly, escalating deficits, Oh yeah. You have point! NOT!

Horace was confused. It's ironic that this education reformer doesn't understand how we come to know the truth. Truth, to the extent we can know it, comes from an open mind, objectivity, and reason.

Truth serves as guiding light to the ways of God. Truth gives clarity. Lies gives misinformation and blinds the way to discover God's thoughts.
