The only safe way to give bones (and they way I give them to my dogs) is to cook them till you can mash them up with a fork!! I sometimes cook chicken bones for a day or day and a half in my slow cooker - just so i don't have to fool with watching them so closely! anyway, after that i make sure they will all mash up -- I do this when making homemade dog food for my dogs.
Do not give them to them if not mashed up completely -- They can and will get one stuck in the throat or have a bad GI problem !! hope this helps !!

Yes raw bones of any kind are ok. So your dog actually got into the coop and killed a chicken? Edit - Ok if your dog is that bad you need to train him to leave the birds be and you need to put up fencing around your coop. Your dog will be fine though he may have loose stools for the next day or so because he is not used to being on raw food. Seriously though training and a fence unless you want him doing this again because he's realized raw meat tastes better than kibble.

Cooked chicken bones can splinter and cause damage to the dog. Most cooked bones in general are bad. Raw bones including chicken bones are fine

It is not safe to give chicken bones to a dog , they say because the bones are much softer than beef bones and tend to get stuck in their throats.

I used to feed my dog chicken bones all the time. She loved them BUT I was told by my vet that chicken bones have a tendency to splinter in the dog's stomach and can cause serious damage to their internal organs (and a lot of vet costs for you!!). Even though they may be eating the bones with no problems now, there is a chance one of the times you feed your dogs chicken bones this could happen. Protect you and your dogs from this happening by keeping chicken bones out of their diet and replacing with another type of doggie treat. Your doggies will love you for it!!

Any cooked bones are not good for dogs. They tend to splinter after they are cooked, especially chicken and turkey. The splinters can then become lodged int he throat or puncture the stomach or intestines. It just sets you up for alot of potential problems. If you want to give bones, try raw. Turkey necks and chicken leg quarters are good and they help to clean the teeth.

the difference between chicken bones and other bones is that they splinter and fall apart very easily. they can swallow them and choke on them or cause damage as it goes down and in the stomach. i would highly recommend NOT giving your dogs chicken bones or pork bones for that matter as they do the same thing. and as with any other bones the pieces can get swallowed and the pieces can build up in the intestines and cause blockage. that is a very dangerous surgery to have done to your dog. your safest bet is a good rawhide thats what i give my dog. i used to give my dog beef bones all the time but now that shes older i give her rawhides. better to play it safe.

If you feed raw bones thats ok but cooked bones pose a danger as they change density when cooked and can splinter.. they also take longer to break down when cooked.
We feed our 6 Great Danes a RAW diet that includes many raw bones of chicken and other kinds of raw meaty bones but I never give my dogs cooked bones and suggest you do not either.

I feed my Corgi RAW chicken bones all the time. Breasts, legs, thighs, backs, necks and wings. As long as the bones are RAW, they are fine. The old thought as we were children, our parents told us no chicken bones to the dogs, they splinter. Well, those were cooked bones we had eaten the meat off of already. RAW feeders know and will tell you, RAW chicken bones are great for dogs. They help keep there teeth pearly white also.

The bones of birds are very different from a mammal's bones. They are not solid but hollow and have lots of little pieces that criss-cross, on the inside for support. They tend to splinter and can get stuck in an animal's digestive tract or cause punctures.

This is actually debated amongst some veterinarians. However, most veterinarians suggest against it because the bones can easily get lodged in a dog's throat and stomach region.
This in turn can generally lead to surgical removal (stomach impactions) if the dog ends up becoming lethargic, constipated and unable to eat/drink as a result.
