"You have the right to file a dispute with the CRA and with the company from which the CRA obtained the information in your credit report if you contest the accuracy of that information. Both the CRA and the source of their information have a legal obligation to reinvestigate the information in dispute. "
So I think first you should file a dispute, and if they don't respond, then perhaps you would have grounds for a lawsuit. I am sure the attorney fees will be more than the charge off.
You might also want to contact the better business bureau.

Yeah you can try, but you have to prove ACTUAL damages. You cannot sue someone just because you feel wronged. Can you justify the amount that you would sue them for? Chances are that you will spend more time and money in court than you will EVER see in a judgment. If this was from almost 4 years ago, you need to take responsibility for not catching this sooner.

If they have your information, perhaps this is a case of identity theft? That is maybe someone else got your name and credit information and ordered direct tv and never paid? If this might be the case, you should contact your credit card companies and banks, and let them know you suspect that your identify has been stolen. there could be other charges you need to be concerned about.
