They closed the account because I missed three payments. I had lost a job and couldn't make them at that time. I am fine now, and the account has been in good standing for over a year at this point. It is one of my oldest accounts, so I want to reopen it to help my credit score. In addition, I still have a balance of $1,000 which I planned on paying off by the end of June...if not sooner. The interest rate is rediculous, so I want it lowered...as soon as possible. Is this a possible request and if so do I call customer service and hope they get me in touch with the appropriate people. What do I ask them and does it make a difference if I tell them I will be paying the card off in a month?

You can work a deal out with them as long as your paying your balance down.. Call them.. Now don't ask for the account to be turned back on quite yet.. Give it about 60 days after you have them lower your interest rate, then call again after making payments and get them to turn it back on...

Good luck

You don't need a credit card to improve your credit score, just paying your utilities on time will do it if they are in your name. You won't be able to reopen the same account, it will count as a new account and so not reap the benefits you're looking for anyway.

If you re-activate the account -- assuming that they're willing to do so in the first place -- they might be willing to lower the interest rate. If you don't reactivate the account, there's no incentive for them to lower it since they have you by the shorthairs already as it is.

If the account is closed there is no such thing as reopening and certainly not for what you are asking. You would have to reapply and see if they would even grant you credit.
