I believe that the list that you are referring to is the traditional anniversary gifts list, where certain items represent individual years. Some people follow those recommendations, other people choose not to. It's up to you as an individual whether or not to decide if that is what you want to do.
Here's the list through ten:
1 - Paper
2 - Cotton
3 - Leather
4 - Linen
5 - Wood
6 - Iron
7 - Wool
8 - Bronze
9 - Pottery
10 - Tin
The complete list can be found at:

There's also a great list with a modern twist on this web site: http://www.chiff.com/entertain/gifts-anniversary.htm

Hey nothing wrong with traditions,a real woman will really appreciate it.Try checking out Hallmark Stores, either in person or online. They usually have a list from year 1 to about 75 for wedding anniversaries. They can also be very helpful in suggesting that perfect gift based on what year.I think year 1 is paper so how about maybe doing a personal pic album of you two together, might be fun and geatly apreciated.Good Luck.BTW...gold-50 years and silver 25 years.

Women love romantic spontaneous things....
try making something totally not romantic into it.
like take her to a concert of music you normally wouldnt listen to she will really appreciate that.
also roses always do the trick!
And there is never anything wrong with a candle lit dinner.

First year used to be paper, now I think it's clocks
25 is silver
50 is gold
75 is diamond
Certain numbers are also ruby, sapphire, and emerald--can't remember those right now. Sorry. Google it!

ON THE 1 YEAR IT IS JUST A CARD. MY HUSBAND AND I HAD OUR 1 YEAR ON MARCH 7 AND WE GAVE EACH OTHER A CARD AND WENT OUT TO DINNER. WE COULDN'T DO MUCH BECAUSE I WAS EIGHT MONTHS PRGNANT WITH MY DAUGHTER. BUT THE ONLY THING THAT YOU DO FOR 1 YEAR IS GIVE EACH OTHER A CARD AND GO OUT TO DINNER.
