Disable your AT&T protection. Download and run the following:
EXCELLENT Free Anti-Spyware:
--AVG Anti-Spyware http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 is a free anti-spyware protection tool developed by GRISOFT for home use.
--SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY http://www.safer-networking.org/ Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
--AD-AWARE http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
--SpywareGuard http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
--SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.

EXCELLENT Free ANTI-VIRUS and Firewall Programs:

As a person who works in FireDog dept at Circuit City and is Windows XP and Vista Certified, I will tell you this.

Computers don't onlly slow down when they have viruses. It can be the number of programs starting up, or an installed program that is causing something in the directory.

My reccomandations are, Get firefox instead of Internet explorer.
Go to Start menu, then hit "RUN" in it write, 'msconfig' with no ' ' and the on top tabs go to startup and uncheck all the programs that start up that you don't need when you restart the computer.
Upgrade your memory. You probebly have a 512mb RAM, try to get at least 1GB
Upgrade to Windows Vista with more security and creativity.

The easiest and the smartest way you can go is, visit a firedog specialist at CircuitCity store near you, and get all the benefits.

But if you REALLY want a computer that doesn't freeze, has no viruses, is much more enjoable and wonn't regret getting, Get A Mac. www.apple.com

I'm a computer technician. The problem you have is a virus. You say that your antivirus did not find a virus or that your spyware software did not detect any spyware- It does sound to me that your antivirus software is way behind on virus definitions. Your antivirus software must be both active (not expired) and fully updated! Same goes for your spyware software.. If this is not the case it will not detect any rogue software. If by some miracle both antivirus and spyware are active and up to date, I'd then say that your computer is in desparate need of a tuning up which is to clean out all junk files and folders and temporary internet files and then once this is done, run a defragmentation of your harddrive.

First, look for the simplest solution - overloaded RAM.

-set wallpaper and screensaver to blank or none.
-review start menu (Start, Settings, Taskbar and Start Menu) and remove any programs you don't need on a daily basis. Be careful here - if you don't know what it is, leave it alone - might be a Windows program.
-run a Disk Cleanup
-run Scandisk
-defrag
-click Start, run, ipconfig renew (that's ipconfig space renew)

Now try it.

Can be for lots of reasons, I for one wouldnt tryst the AV software free, but you could try using another one, I think Panda is a good start as an all-in-one. www.pandasoftware.com and download the Internet suite for 30 days. you will need to remove the old AV software first. its worth a try.

Add RAM. Most cost effective upgrade, and most common cause of lockups.
