It really depends on you. You can "white-knuckle" and stop any addiction. Stopping the addiction isn't the hard part, the hard part is changing your thinking. Usually an addiction isn't just physical, it is also mental. We have to change the way we think about what we are addicted to. That is one of the reasons it isn't recommended to do it by yourself, as others that have gone through the withdrawals (any addiction will have withdrawals when you try to stop) will be able to support you when you are trying to quit. They have already done what you are trying to do, and can give you guidelines on how to move through the "quitting process" easier.
Besides, why would you want to go through by yourself ? Is it because you don't want anyone else to know what your addiction is? Or are you afraid of the outcome if others finds out? Also it takes a very "humble person" to go and ask for help. This humblesness is needed when trying to quit an addiction.

It depends on what the addiction happens to be; sex, alcohol, drug, what?

I ask because it does make a difference. If you are talking about what I listed, those are more successfully dealt with by getting professional help. It is important that the person also recognizes the "why" of the addiction. What I mean by that is, why did they start? Is the problem they never learned to cope with life, problems, relationships, what? Sometimes knowing the why helps.

Also, they need to be careful not to trade one addiction for another, which happens. Finding a good program and a good counselor to see and with someone to be a mentor helps to keep the person on the right path. Bottom line, they need to want to change and work hard at it and start a new life with friends and family that are not users.
