A great site on understanding credit card features... make sure you know exactly what you're getting. Some companies can trick you with low intro rates, and charge you an arm and a leg later.

Also, do not use your credit card for cash advances. Most cards charge at least 20% interest.

www. bankrate.com is great for choosing a card from the many out there.

Having a credit card, and using it responsibly every month is a great long-term plan for building your credit score. Having a good credit score will save $ in the future, because companies will offer you lower rates to finance cars, a house, etc.

Look for:

1. No annual fee
2. Low APR *below 7 is great to start with

You can find a complete list of credit cards for people with little or no credit history here:

http://www.asapcreditcard.com/unsecured-offers.html

Although these offers tend to have higher interest rates (and additional fees) when compared to 'standard' credit cards-- they'll help you build and improve your credit score over time. Eventually, with regular on-time payments-- you'll be able to apply for 'standard' credit cards with lower APR's and less fees.

* I would highly recommend the Orchard Bank Platinum card. It's a very competitive unsecured offer (which requires no security deposit). Plus, if you aren't approved, Orchard will automatically offer you a secured card instead. This way you only apply once, and avoid extra inquiries on your credit report.

ALSO: Are you going to college soon??? If so, you might want to consider a 'student' credit card. These offers will help you avoid some of the fees from above-- and still allow you to build / improve your credit score. You can find them here:

Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!

Prepaid credit card uses Not only can a prepaid card enable customers who find it hard to get credit, but this type of card can help you take control of your finances, if you have found normal credit card interest rates too high and the balance offered too tempting. You can be confident that you will stick to your budget with a pre-paid card, as you are the one who sets it by deciding how much to top-up your card with!

Most prepaid credit cards can enable you to: No longer have to carry cash when shopping Use an ATM to withdraw money - at home and abroad Transfer funds - send money to other cardholders Shop on the internet with security Top up your mobile phone Have an additional prepaid credit card for family use - useful for a teenager for emergency use (usually 13 years plus for a named card holder)

Pre-loading your card You will need to pre-load your card before use and this can be done in different ways: by direct transfer from a bank account, or by paying in cash at a nominated outlet. The prepaid credit card is accepted in most of the ways that a normal card is, but unlike a credit card because you pay before you make a purchase, you can't exceed your credit limit. You can apply online for a prepaid credit card at: http://www.credit-card-gallery.com/PrePaid_Card.html and get instance approval.

Get one with a limited amount of money you can charge--like $500.00. Use if for emergencies and pay it off as quickly
as possible each time you use it. Don't get into credit card debt, and don't be tempted by cards that offer to pay you back a small percentage. And one card is enough,
for a few years. Good Luck!

Get a gas card. I know it sounds stupid, but this will help you alot in the future. if you can find one that is a visa or mastercard, even better. Gas cards usually offer rebates on gas which could save you money at the pump, but they look good on your credit report when you look for a house later on.

The card with the lowest interest rate. Read the fine print, though. Don't be fooled by low introductory rates that turn into hefty rates later on.
