They do offer home test kits where you prick your finger and put the blood on a strip. This test will give you a pretty good estimate, of course there can be innacuracy sometimes. If you just want some sort of range on where you are, then go with the test kit. A doctor can do it as well, you might be able to get a better reading from a doctor.
