Truman got the US and the UN involved in the Korean War by not sticking to the Potstam Agreement worked out between Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin during WW-2.
The agreement divided Korea into two temporary area with the north controlled by Russia and the south controlled by America and elections to be held within 2 years over both regions.
Firstly, the US came in and allowed the Japanese soldiers to keep their guns, allowed the Japanese Secret Military police to continue operating, would not allow any elections to take place and then declared the south as an independent country in violation of international law and the UN charter. They installed a dictator in the south and re-armed the south.
The common story is that the North invaded the south in June 1950, but there are numerous documents and other proof that it was actually the South that invaded the north. One of these is a document written by two Australian military offers attached to the UN mission, an Australian army Major and an Australian navy Lt. Commandor along with a British Diplomat who went on a fact-finding tour just prior to the war. They found a build-up in the south along with major troop movements while there was no movement in the north. The three filed their report to their governments and to the UN but the report was suppressed until several months after the UN vote to send troops into the conflict.

Kind of, but it was the UN trying to take charge of its first major crisis and we were the ones pushing the UN at that time.
