I'd feel alot better with our presidents if I knew that 85% of the people were involved in voting for them.

I agree an 85% voter turn out is amazing. The predicted turn out for the upcoming Irish election is anticipated to be about 90% and the recent Scottish turn out was in the upper 70%. Makes one wonder what is wrong here. We state how free we are and how involved in the political process and yet our poll numbers don't show it. I hear complaints about the quality of the candidates being elected and that is a direct relation to the fact that the parties know that they don't need to put up a top quality candidate for them to be elected as most of this country is apathetic. So in response, Good job FRANCE

For your information, what the French are getting right which causes a high voter turnout is that the elections were on Sunday when most people were not working.

Here in the workaholic US, that might not work, since a lot of us work 7 day weeks. BUT, it is worth a try.

There have been proposals to make voting days offical holidays with all the stores and businesses closed or at least at reduced staff so people could get out and vote.

However, I personally think that the powers that be have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo, because reduced voter turnout gives power to more radical right or left groups. So change will come hard, will have to come from a grassroots effort of interested voters.

sure but what about all the countries where everyone votes, without being forced to- that deserves major kudos. the quick answer is simple, make voting mandatory. sure its not a perfect solution but its an improvement. in australia you get fined if you dont. mind you almost everyone votes and they still ended up with johnny howard......scary

But the French also seem to engage in riots frequently when the election doesn't go their way...they used to have revolutions on a regular basis there.

considering america's voter turnout is around 50% and about 80% of our population complains about who wins the election... i say we need to try and get our crap together and beat france... that way no one will be complaining about the results.

I guess that most Frenchmen felt that the future of their country was at stake. Good for them for turning out in record numbers.
