I was thinking of a Jetta

When you say "new car" I assume you mean brand new..?
If so , even the very most basic Jetta is more than $16,000
& don't forget about taxes & fees.

The Focus is a great value.It is recommended by Consumer Guide & also gets better gas mileage than the Jetta

I would buy something that gets good milage in the 6-10K dollar range and save the rest of your money.

ford focus Zx3. only cost 13-14Kand has more interior room than most cars for that price. and 37mpg highway.
