Probably for the same reason that Christians believe that the church should not be a part of the government today. When the focus of the church is taken off Jesus Christ and the great commission of spreading the gospel and refocused on temporal matters then corruption comes in as surely as if the wall of a dam is taken away.
That doesn't mean that Christians shouldn't vote for candidates who reflect their moral views. It just means that Christianity must serve God and not allow money and power to become competing "idols" in the church setting.
Matthew 6:24 "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
When the government of Rome became united with the church of Christ it was a mixed blessing to say the least. On the one hand Christianity was freed from persecution and suppression. On the other hand the church was inundated with marginal "believers" and the leaders of the church became at least in part subject to the secular government in deciding church matters.

guess those people in the 400's didnt have all kinds of cool stuff that you need money to buy.

obviously because the church is notorious for becoming corrupt. As are governments.
