I have developed a slight throbbing toothache on a tooth that only shows a tiny cavity. It is sensitive to the tap. Not sensitive to hot or cold yet though. Any dentists, endodontists or RDA's out there that can help? Does this mean I need another root canal? I left a msg with my dental office today.

I just wanted to clarify that it is NOT sensitive to either hot or cold at this point. It is an old filling with a tiny brown line and it is mildly throbbing at this point. I am waiting for my dentist to call to make an apmt.

Simple toothache does not mean root canal needs to be done.

Extreme sensitivity to hot or especially cold usually means that the tooth is cracked and the nerves are exposed. If you are not experiencing any of this, then you probably don't need a root canal.By the way I have had 4 root canals, and the only pain I had was when I got the bill.A good endodontist will never cause you any pain.Good Luck

Yes you should go to a dental office ASAP if you tap a tooth or is hot sens. that means that your nerve of your tooth is dead. Or if you just had a filling done it might be high. I have been doing this for 8 years as a dental asst. GO BITE ON A PEN, DOES IT HURT AND LET YOU D.D.S KNOW. Take ADVIL about 600-800mg. every 4-6 hours IF YOU CAN TAKE IT!!!!!

if the cavity is near the root ,it can cause a lot of pain =it isn't necessarily a root canal job=maybe a regular filling needed to be done

i work in a dentist office and usually when u come in they will ask you where the pain is and they will take x-rays of it so the dentist can figure out what is wrong and how to fix it.
