The Russians, with the T-34 series of tank. It was fast, rugged, maneuverable, and packed a punch. The German King Tiger had better armament and armor, but was not as easily deployed, and was slow, and made in small numbers. The Russians, meanwhile, could easily mass-produce the T-34.

oh, and don't believe all those goofballs above; why do you think the Russians so easily crushed the Germans? Winter? part of it. but mainly it was the armored spearhead of tanks!

The best tank overall is the PzKpfw V Panther. Many have of the respondents have said the T-34 is the best. But the main difference is that the Panther was basically the same tank when it was first built in 1942 till the end of the war.
The T-34 on the other hand started as a two-man turret with a 76mm gun.Then a hexagonal shaped turret with a 76mm gun.Then finally a larger turret to handle the larger 85mm gun(T-34/85).Same thing for the Sherman tank.M4A1 & A2(short barrel 76mm gun).M4A3(long barrel 76mm gun).Sherman Vc Firefly(76.2mm gun).M4A3E8(75mm long barrel gun).
By 1943 the T-34 was becoming outclassed by the Panther,Tiger I and in 1944, the Tiger II.But like the Sherman and the PzKpfw IV, the T-34 remained in production throughout the war.
The T-34 was replaced by a new design called the T-44.Though not in terms of numbers. The T-44 saw limited service at the end of the war.The T-44 was a T-34/85 with a shallower turret.
In fact the T-44 was the forerunner of the T-54/55 series of tanks.
Though the T-34/85 had a bigger gun with a longer barrel than earlier T-34's.It could not compare to the Panthers much longer and more powerful 75mm gun.
Overall, both the T-34 and the Panther had good mobility. But the Panther had better armor and a better gun.The T-34 had the numbers, but you judge the best tank by mobility, armor and firepower. Not by numbers alone.

Judging by some previous answers, a little education is in order.

"Panzer" is short for Panzerkampfwagen, the German word for armoured combat vehicle. So if you say "The German Panzer was the best tank", that's the same as saying "The German Tank was the best tank". In other words, WHICH German tank do you feel was the best?

Now, to answering the question.........

The best medium tank of the war was either the Soviet T-34/85 or the Panzerkampfwagen V Ausf. G Panther.

The best heavy tank of the war was the Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. E Tiger I.

If I had to pick just one, I'd probably go with the T-34/85. Good protection, good gun, good mobility, good reliability........not any particular weaknesses. The German tanks had a lot of very strong attributes, yet were plagued by a lack of mobility and reliability.

The Germans generally speaking had the most technologically advance designs, but for all that their tanks consistently suffered from reliability problems. The Soviet tanks were usually just as rugged yet were more reliable, which is why I accord them a slight edge.

As a note to david g: When the Germans realized they needed to design a new tank to combat the T-34/76, Daimler-Benz proposed simply producing an almost identical copy. Since this never would have worked politically, Daimler-Benz and MAN took the best features of the T-34/76 including the sloped armor, powerful gun, and wider tracks. The Panther probably had a slight edge with its gun, but the T-34/85 had a little bit more armor. Again, like I said, they were pretty dang close, and I'll take the more reliable T-34/85. Doesn't matter how great the tank is if she's immobilized because of a breakdown :)

If you take away the bombing of tanks, the Tiger1 was the best, it could destroy any allied tank before the allied tanks could fire at it (thus tigerfobia). In addition, the panther out classed the T-34 in every way, German design and technology far surpassed Russian. Later versions were better prepared, and had more kill ratios, Heck, if you put a hundred puppies on a wolf, maybe they would win, with a terrible cost, as of what happened to the Soviets. In fact if anyone knows anything, they know Russians shot down Allied Air planes, claimed they thought they were German, returned the pilots etc.., but kept the plane to build from. The number of tanks didn't matter for if the north army group was left to do its bussiness, Moscow would have fallen, the hub of the Soviet Union could have been surrended before the new year, supplies cut off ... DA DA DA DA!

On technological grounds, the German Pzkw V "Panther" was the best. A superb weapons system that was rushed into production before all the bugs had been ironed out, and never on the battlefield in sufficient numbers to show its dominance.

The best-known US tank was, of course, the Sherman. Another cheap and easy to produce vehicle that we could get out in large number very rapidly. A company of 10 Shermans could usually defeat a Tiger tank.

But in terms of greatest impact on the battlefield, I'd have to give the top award to the Soviet T-34 series tanks. When the T-34 first appeared on the battlefield, it was a massive shock to the Germans. Fast, maneuverable, reliable, and simple as dirt -- easily maintained, and designed for the Russian battlefield, it stunned the Germans. It had a very wide track, so its ground pressure was less than than of the German tanks -- this meant it could handle muddy, swampy terrain much better than the German tanks, which frequently bogged down in the mud of the Russian front. The sloped armor design meant that it could carry less mass of steel plate than the German panzers (which had blocky, vertical surfaces until the introduction of the Panther) while achieving the same effective armor thickness. The 76 mm gun on the early variants of the T-34 was okay -- good at close range, but ineffective at the standoff ranges needed to defeat the German 88mm AT guns. But the Russians could send so many T-34s at the Germans that, even with losses to AT fire, they could close to within effective range with sufficient tanks to kick some serious butt. And the later varient, which had an 85mm main gun, could stand toe-to-toe with anything except a Tiger. Damn fine tank.

Hope that helps.

It depends on your criteria of best tank. Most would give the Germans with the best tanks with the Tigers and King Tigers, but it most be noted that the Germans stop production of those tanks after awhile because they were too complicated to build and maintain. The Panther probably was the best German Tank overall, but it was based on the Russian T-34 tank which I believe was the best overall tank.

The most advanced tank would be the Panther. The best mass produced tank would go to the T-34. The best light tank M24.
