$20, it's a token, not an endowment

Where I'm from, the typical HS graduation gift from aunts/uncles is about $25. For a friends child, the typical gift is $10-$15, depending on how well you know the child.

Honestly, if the child of a distant cousin is sending you a HS graduation announcement, it sounds like trolling for gifts. I'd go with just the card.

It's not proper to send money for high school graduation. Gifts of cash for anything other than a wedding are crass. If you feel a need to congradulate the person, a card would be nice. If you're feeling flush and want to inspire the graduate, why not go to Barnes and Noble and pick out an interesting and suitable book for her?

High School graduation is a very big milestone in a child's life.
If the child is going to college ( call and ask if you don't know),
a $100, is the usual gift for a distant relative. If the child isn't going to college, $50 is usually, the accepted standard.

If you feel a need to ask, I'd say ZERO; if you received an announcement, it was a request for money, at the most, I'd send a card ( I say this solely based on your comment that this is a distant cousin's child, and apparently not your closest chum).

great question. i always wonder about this type of thing, but it has to come down to two points...
1) how close are you?
2) how much do you have?
but, with those things not being too extreme either way, i think the correct amount is no more than $25.

20 dollars, maybe even put it in a gift card so it goes towards college stuff. Great college places are Target, Wal-Mart, or the best is Bed,Bath, and Beyond.

maybe like 20 dollars at the most although that is probably to much but anything less than 20 seems just cheap in my opinion
