Well, if you want to follow the tradition, you should dink wine, but if you don't want to, be creative and do your wedding your own way!
Even if you do "break" the tradition, what could possibly go wrong?
Oh, and to reassure you against what Matt said, they will not be there for the free food. They will be there to celebrate the joyous day with you and your feyonce :)

God, no. I've been to many weddings and I've never, ever even heard of this tradition. Of course, it could be that I live in New England and we don't generally do those kinds of things up here, but honestly, by the time you get to the point of the wedding where you're cutting the cake, both of you will want to be on your way to being sober, so that you can have a memorable night together!
Good luck. I hope that the wedding is wonderful and it works out.

No, you don't have to drink wine when you cut the cake. It wouldn't be breaking a tradition.

Traditions are being broken more and more often.
If you don't want to drink wine, then don't. Heck, you can toast with water or Sprite or some other drink and that'll be fine.
You don't HAVE to do anything at a wedding besides say your vows and have an officiant and two witnesses :)

I have never seen anyone drink wine while they cut the cake. You are supposed to cut the cake and then feed it to each other. As far as drinking you are supposed to have a drink for the toast, I don't think it matters what you drink.

It is your wedding...drink chocolate milk while you cut the cake if you wish...or orange juice...or water. The idea is to toast but you can use any beverage to do that...do whatever is best for you both.

At your wedding you can set your own tradition. So if you both want to be toasted with any drink you want is fine. ( I have heard that it is bad luck to toast with water.) But your wedding day is your day what you want is what it should be. Other persons and what they want don't count including parent, and friends. It is nice to Please everyone but you should put yourself first.

I'm not sure where you're from, but I never even heard of that. Anyway, do what feels right for the two of you; not what tradition dictates{(as long as it's legal :) }.

It doesnt matter, its not like an airplane is going to fall on your head then get struck by lightning if you do that. Dont worry, most people wont care that you are doing that, they are just there for the free food.

You don't necessarily have to drink wine, you could drink sparkling cider, punch if it's being served,or don't drink anything.
