If you aren't seeking treatment for your GERD, I would suggest you do. Until then, try using Prilosec OTC. You can buy a 14 day supply at Target for just $10. I have issues with acid reflux from time to time, but I just take Pepcid before I eat anything spicy. I have taken Prilosec OTC and it did help. Before that I took a prescription called Aciphex and it worked wonders. I would definitely encourage you to seek medical treatment. Also, if you haven't stopped drinking soda, I would encourage you to stop. Try and stick to water & milk. Good luck!

Have you tried any medications, either over the counter or prescription? My DH and three DS's all have this problem. The kids are easy to handle, we just make sure to limit activity after meals. My DH on the other hand has had to have two ballooning procedures done on his esophagus due to scar tissue build up from the reflux. He used to take Pepcid AC until a few weeks ago the Dr. had him try Protonix and it's working great.
In the past though, I have noticed that about every three months, his body adjusts to the new medicine and he has to switch again. He's tried all of the popular medications and they all work decently until he adjusts and then it's on to the next one.

Tums give immediate relief. Get some and use them until it improves.
Stop drinking caffeine and alcohol.
These both contribute to the symptoms. When you go to the doctor, the handout mentions these, but emphasis is given to using acid inhibiting drugs. (for the rest of your life)
Try to lose weight.
Good luck.

This link will give you some good information on GERD.
Also know, that sometimes GERD can present itself as a heart attack. Either way, if you ever get those symptoms, its best to call 911 because you wont know either way.

Have you seen a doctor yet about your GERD? He should be able to prescribe medicine that will help control the acid reflux. I would give him a call.
