Aside from the quickie-divorce mecca of Nevada, no region of the United States has a higher divorce rate than the Bible Belt. Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama and Oklahoma round out the top five in frequency of divorce. In a country where nearly half of all marriages break up, the divorce rates in these conservative states are roughly 50 percent above the national average.

All people in the South aren't religious but the South is known as the Bible -Belt.

I've heard lots of Country Songs without God in them & I don't like Country music & I'm an Atheist.

I live in the southwest and I am spiritual, not religious. There are many spiritual ones in the south as well, but they are none of them religious. I guess they just don't write good enough country songs that sell.

You need to broaden your interests beyond the Top-40-style stuff on the radio. Try mixing in some more folk, blues, and bluegrass. I once heard a bluegrass ensemble perform a hilarious ditty called "God'll F@ck You Up." The nonbelievers are out there, you just gotta find them and they're worth the search. Good luck!

I once worked with a country music "star" at a country music venue. We talked about this. He said, Oh yeah, god is always good for sales, but on the other hand nobody tells you you have to say which god, if the record sells.

Yeah, I'm that old.

I'm a Heathen Hillbilly. I'm not Christian.

I know what you mean about the modern country music. Country music used to be about cheatin' hearts, jail, railroads, bad men and women, tough lives, etc. Now every single song is a sappy, drippy suburban ballad about abused children, angels in heaven, men who love their wives, firemen rescuing babies, the American flag, and brave soldiers serving their country. Puke, give me perfidy, booze and jail any day!

That's why my favorite country singer is Hank Williams III. *grins* You might like him, he's a godless heathen and very talented.

Because the South is traditionally a land filled with 'working class heroes,' or those who are poor, as most of the US' industry is concentrated in the North.

When people have little money they try to justify their existence with some kind of deity, or the promise of a life that will be vastly superior to their current situation.

They don't call it The Bible Belt for nothing.

Some social scientists could speculate about it. A few have. One hypothesis I like is that the South had more immigrants from religious parts of Europe, and religion sort of replaced the extended family in a nation of immigrants.

Why didn't it happen in the north? Well, many of the immigrants there came with their entire families, and they were from more "mainline" streams of Christianity. Catholic Irish in Chicago. Lutherans in Minnesota.

And in the Western states, there's always been sort of a culture of non-theism.

Change the station. Why in the north does there seem to be more nonreligious? I live in Texas and I would say that there is also a difference between being religious and having faith. They do not always go hand in hand.
