I recently went to Japan, and had to have my infant daughter's passport within 3 weeks. I went to the post office, had her picture taken, filled out the application, and added a check in the envelope for an expedited passport. I then paid for overnight shipping (both ways). I think, in all, it cost me around $200. I then received the passport exactly 10 days from the date that I went to the post office.
When I applied for my passport years ago, I went to a regional passport facility (there are 13 of these nationwide). I paid for expedited service, I think it was an extra $30.00. At that time, I needed the passport within one month (which I specified on the application). After applying I came back 3 hrs later and received my passport that same day. In all, it cost me a little over $90.
If you have a regional office nearby, I would try that first. If not, do expedited service with overnight shipping from a passport acceptance facility. You can find all the information at

You might get it in ten days or it may take months. Odds are you will get it in two months..... that is worst case. You could be cutting it close though. Others will tell you about the fact that this is always the busiest time of year for passports and with new rules it could be worse.
If you want to make sure pay for the expidited service and the you will have a leg to stand on if it takes a long time. If you really want to make sure pay the for one day mail both ways, a total of say $50.00. You will be able to track it and you might get it in 5 days. If worst came to worse before your trip you would be able to make it happen right away after you paid it.

Yes, this is true - I sent off for mine if February and still don't have it. But... you can have it expedited for an extra cost (you should see it there on the application). Expedited takes 10 days approximately. You can even schedule an appointment at an actual Passport Place to have it done the same day. Check it out on www.travel.state.gov

Yes, it can take over 5 months if needed.
My friend got married and booked their honeymoon and they didn't have their passports. They got theirs in time [1 month] and the wife's was fine, but his had an elderly woman's picture on it. [they got it the day before their trip] So his wife could go on their honeymoon. But he had to stay home.
