Spirits are much higher proof. It differentiates between beer and wine (both much lower proof).

Spirits have been distilled. Spirits is another term for liquor, not just any alchoholic beverage, beer and wine are not considered spirits

When you use the word 'spirits' you refer to a drink that contains alcohol. Other drinks don't.
