The best way to do edit pictures is installing Adobe Photoshop and learning how to use it (Use the Help, there you can find lots of tips).

For what you want to do the best program is Photoshop. However it can be complicated at first and quite costly.

A great free program to start off with is google's Picasa.

It allows you to crop and adjust many elements of your photos. It is free and very easy to use. I find it to be a great starter program when getting a feel for photo editing.

photoshop is too much...get Photoshop Elements...It costs about $100 or so and will do everything you want...You don't really need the full blown photoshop. (it costs over $500)
