I would first check your local Craigslist for an engine or an old beater VW that runs well. I picked up a whole '72 car (with running engine) for $400 and swapped all the good parts with my 71, and sold it with the old engine (ran but smoked) for $350. That was a year ago and my $50 engine is still running strong. (and the wiper switch now works too ).

The engines are easy to swap out (about an hour each way plus time to replace the clutch (why not while you are in there?) and clean it off.

While the beater engine is running you can have your old one re-built (or even better).

good luck

I second the craigslist.org suggestion. I bought a VW beater with a running motor for $300 up here in Alaska (where everything VW is hard to come by), swapped out the motors, and resold it without a motor for $100, I kept the old motor and am currently rebuilding it as a backup, it never hurts to have a backup motor, especially one that can fit comfortably under the average workbench.

Also, www.ohiovw.com is a wellspring of info for you, I'm sure they could hook you up with a great VW shop in your area, they may even have a list of recommended shops on the page.

Good luck!

Your local wrecking yard would be a good place to start. If you come up dry there (Which is possible these motors seem to disapear faster then virgins on prom night. check with the local VW clubs in your area and see what sources they have. you could also look at the local auto part stores and see how much they are from them. they often come with 12 months 15,000 mile warraties on them.

This automobile is heavy for its length, by fact physique panels are made up of galvanized metallic. lots harder stuff than what you will locate on American automobiles or Asian automobiles of its classification. It has 4 airbags upfront, ABS, and traction administration. It additionally has very tight, responsive guidance (facilitates you steer around hindrances), and a shape that protects you in case of rollover. The crash rankings have been suggested by skill of yet another poster. in case you pick to verify actual-existence adventure, there are a number of on the area under. some human beings have rolled their trojan horse 10 cases and walked away with merely bruises. it relatively is all there on the communicate board, and the everybody is very powerful and friendly - no longer offended and boastful like maximum different automobile boards.

Try to look on ebay, or look for junkyards in New Mexico or Arizona, they usually have websites but you will have to call them in person to tell them what you are looking for.
