I feel, when used properly, they are an effective means of gradual correction for pulling when walking. I don't recommend use for punishment or any other reason though.

What are your feelings?

I use one on my pit bull when we go walking, she gets excited around other dogs and wants to play with them. PLAY not attack, she was around other dogs all her life and fixed right when she was old enough to be so she is very dog friendly. She is pretty strong and treats collars and harnesses like they are minor annoyances, so this is the best method for me with my dog.

She has been through multiple training classes and does fine after being around them for a while, but the immeadiate reaction of running up to a dog and sniffing it like a mad man, has led to her being bit by numerous other dog.

I prefer the prong collar my self. I use it in conjunction with the electric collar and get excellent results. I have no idea where people get their ideas or answers here and I also love the way you worded your question, so carefully as not to upset any of the humaniacs here. As if they have any idea of what or how to effectively use a prong collar or even a plain choker. The sound of the chain will scare a dog or get his arrention? I hope NOT. My dog will laugh at that statement and bite me for even thinking it. I would deserve it too. All dogs need corrections and proofing if they are to ever become reliable. Positive methods DO NOT WORK for that phase of training.

A training collar (choke hate the word choke since that is NOT the purpose of the collar at all) fitted correctly, put on correctly and used correctly is a very useful training aid. A properly fit and used training colalr 1) does NOT restrict air flow 2) does NOT choke the dog 3) causes no harm or pain to the dog.

Any training aid including gentle leaders/halti's, harnesses and even regualr buckle collars can cause harm to a dog if not used correctly.

I think that choke collars are an effective training tool. However, I think you should take the choke collar off and replace it with another when the dog is simply roaming the house or tied outside. Choke collars should only be used for TRAINING and never for repremanding your dog.
I think you've got the right idea though ;) Good Luck

AKC version- used properly a so-called choke chain is an audio cue for a dog. Some dogs respond to the click of the links as a form of correction and don't pull all the way into the chain. A choke chain should be long enough for at least three links to clik when you change direction.
Right here you should know there's a right way and a wrong way to use them. THEY ARE NOT TO RESTRICT AIRFLOW.

there are choke collars that are not made of chain that are another good choice, it will still tighten but is made out of regular collar material no metal wraped around the neck, but in my opinion the no-pull harnesses that tighten under front legs work the best for pulling problems.

The key words are "used correctly" and sadly even many trainers use incorrectly , as they use it to the choke the dog,

The correction is not the choke, but the sound of the chain quickly slipping thru the rings, the idea is not to choke the dogs but to use the sound for to get their attention and letting the dog know they are not doing the right thing

If used as they were originally meant then they are very humane

They work, but there are safer ones... My dog has a harness that turns her head when she tries to run, it doesn't hurt her at all.

It is cruel! That is no way to treat an animal, would you like it if someone put that on you? Besides it is a hazard. If you have more than one dog or your dog starts to play with another dog the chain can get caught and strangle or even break one of the dogs necks, I have seen it happen. You should really think this through

I agree. They are a mild reminder to behave while walking. But one should never be left on an unsupervised dog! Bad things happen, trust me.
