if youre a natural brunette, however dark or light, i would suggest getting the boots range hair dye and dye your hair "warm chestnut".

Choose a color that matches your features, like a tone that compliments your skin tone or the redest sections of your face, also dont make them all straight and all the same sizes natural highlights arent all perfect, its ok to mess the streaks directions a little bit. Start from the back to the front could be a tip just because so you know you wont miss a spot. It also depends on your hair color. Red and blonde wont look as natural as brown and red maybe. Start highlights small and then go bigger when youre more comfortable. i say where the highlights would be extremely noticeable make them smaller in section size and then where they arent as noticeable make the streaks bigger so it still shows and balances out.

What color is your hair now? If your hair is light, than you could use a homemade hair dye recipe like this:
http://www.pioneerthinking.com/reddye.html
It wouldn't give you highlights, it would be a slow to show, all over red. For the streaked look which is what I think you want, you could do a henna dye, which sometimes comes in a reddish color.
If your hair is dark, you could try to work with lemon juice and such things.

If you post more about what you want and what your hair is like now, I'll come back and edit my answer to suit your needs better :)

First off....I have to say some of the people who answered this are being very mean.....if you can't be nice don't answer the question....get a life and quit picking on people.

Now about your hair....I've used Sun-in before you can get it at Walmart or products like that its a spray, you spray on your hair and then sit in the sun and it will lighten it up a little.....if you want something more than a light color you can give yourself natural looking highlights, go to the beauty supply store tell them what you want to do and they will help you. I do mine all by myself all the time. You will have to buy a highlighting cap and pull the hair you want highlighted through the little wholes with a hook that comes with the cap or you can buy it seperately...it looks like a crochet hook....the clerk at the beauty supply can help pick out the color you want your highlights to be and tell you how to mix it up. Then you apply with a brush to the hair you pulled through and then you are done. Hope this helps and I'm sorry these people were mean to you, obviously there mother didn't teach them any manners. Good luck.

Use henna. Henna is a natural product that is use as a dye. It will bring out the natural reds in your hair without leaving your hair looking dyed. I am a redhead that uses it to livin' up my hair. Henna is also a good conditioner. Word of warring henna IS a dye and will stain anything it touches including hands, face and clothing. Go to Just for Redheads at www.justforredheads.com. They have different "colors" of red to use.

Whatever you do dont use sun in! That will turn your hair orangeish and damage it. Its not worth it. But henna is good. Otherwise pay a little money to get great results in a salon. Do highlights with foils, not a cap so that they arent picking random pieces of hair to make you look rediculous.

Do not use lemon juice and go out in the sun. YOu will damage your hair and turn it orange.

Instead go to a salon, and get it done.
