How long should I expect him to live at this rate? He had total hepatic system/ liver failure 2 years ago this Oct - barely lived - in Hosp 16 days.Last October he had a siezure from withdrawal - he started drinking 24 beers every 2 wks - that I know about - He should not drink at all but says he isn't him if he can't have a beer. I am beside myself finding he is stashing beer in the trunk of his car, & other really cute places around the house. HELP!! I am deeply hurt seeing him commit suicide this way...he does not really want to live anymore since he can't do what he used to...where we live there is little or no support at all, our kids have grown & his boys are in their own worlds. I have been with him throughout this ordeal & it's been a really rough ride for us both. I love him & won't leave him, but his Dr.Jeckle & Mr.Hyde personality is tearing me apart & he remembers only what he wants to remember. He is on blood pressure/2 dif diuretic meds & pantaloc.Lorazapam too

Unfortunately, it looks as if he's made the choice to continue hurting himself. At that rate, he won't make it much longer. You can try your best to help him stop drinking, but if he doesn't want to stop, then the only thing you can do is divorce him or make sure that his affairs are in order and that you're ready emotionally for when he finally succumbs. I'm sorry.

When I was your age all I drank was wine at Sunday lunch with my family. I work in a bar, and I can tell you there is nothing more repugnant to me than a drunken idiot. Alcohol puts stress on your body, because your body sees alcohol as a poison, and has to get it out of your system. Alcohol is bad for your liver,it makes you appear unhealthy,we're talking red faced complexions and big swollen noses,a drinker can be spotted by the way they look.Alcohol is a drug, therefore it is addictive. You must not drink alcohol for a misguided sense of being mature.Even if you have sobered up,the effect of alcohol can still impair your mental ability.Cut down! Good luck for the future.

End stage liver disease is a rough road he seems dedicated to take. he will not be placed on a liver transplant list unless he stops drinking - no options there-

he requires professional medical/psycihaitric help as alcoholism is an addiction that requires a multi disceplenary approach. your commitment alone will not do it.

my mother died of cirhossis. eventually the other organs will shut down due to the liver dmg. Kidneys, pancreas, heart, (stress and edema on the heart). the death is horrific, unlike anything ive ever seen, and ive lived through many many deaths in my family. The cirhossis was the worst. ultimately, you can not make him choose to not drink. i went through that too. bad thing is, liver transplants are not available to those who drink who unless they go through rehab and can prove that are dried out. which i do understand. it left my chances of seeing my mother live though. i have no advise other than make him see someone on the ward who has 100 lbs of water wt, yellow bruised skin& yellow goo coming from their eyes because they are so ill with cirhossis. maybe it will chg his mind. God bless for a change in his lifestyle.

If he is going through withdrawal, he probably needs to be under a doctor's supervision while trying to quit alcohol. Withdrawal can kill sometimes. There are no easy answers. Your husband has to care. You can only love and support him. You cannot make him care. Talk with a doctor or counselor. Good luck!

I know what you are going thru as I have been in his shoes,,minus all the illness he suffers. It is awful for the family especially you as you love him and are seeing him destroy himself. But if that his choice let him enjoy it,,,really,,,,let him know you are aware of his drinking and he don't need sneak it. Sneaking the substance makes it much worse for him,,,and he might possibly even drink less if he doesn't have to sneak it and you don't convict him for it. Just say something like "I want you to know you can drink in front of me,,I love you and am sorry you have this deadly disease,,,(because it is a disease and it gets worse not better, it's chronic, there is no cure) if he is going to drink till he dies, don't make it anymore miserable than it already is. Believe me he isn't enjoying himself,,it's harder on him than you,,,,and he is probably ashamed to drink in front of you because he feels like a failure,,,,,""like he couldn't even quit drinking" people who are not alcoholic just can't understand that,,,
