Yep. Use your cloning tool/stamp. Enlarge your pic, then slowly & methodically click/clone areas close to the particular piece of text and stamp over the text to cover it up. I've done this numerous times.

If you haven't used your cloning tool much, here's a tutorial:

In that case you don't erase the text you bring back the image behind it.

Use the clone brush to bring the colors behind the text and paint them over the text. You will have to try and continue any lines in the image or patterns. This can take a while if the text is covering a detailed part of the image.

A better way to handle it would be if the text was put on a layer over the image. Then you could just turn the layer with the text on or off. The problem is that it you try to save the image in a GIF or JPEG format the layers will all be combined into one layer and there is no way that you can get the layer information back. That's the price for have a compressed image format.

Depending on the file format of the picture there are multiple programs you can use. Photoshop is certainly viable, and very powerful. If the file is a native photoshop file and the text is in a seperate layer in the photo, you can just remove the layer. Otherwise you will have to either cut out the section or the text itself and leave a hole in it's place.

Yes, photoshop can work, but it takes a long time to do if you want the picture to be perfect. (I know that from experience.) I do not really know if there is software that allows you to do this, but I am pretty sure there probably is.
