I'm looking into self deffense. If anyone knows what is safer to use- mace or taser, with minimal risk to me I'd appreciate it

A taser launches the electrode over a particular distance, while stun guns have no launchable parts, and need to be used in close proximity to the person you want to drop.

Edit: ('scuse me-got em mixed up...)

The Police use the most popular type of Taser, from Taser International. Most have the X26 model that is specifically tailored to Law Enforcement. It has up to a 25 foot range, with new longer cartriges on the way, and has laser and light assisted options. Each probe shoots out of the Taser via excited nitrogen gas that is triggered by electricity. Each time you depress the trigger, it is good for a 5 second shock. They even came out with a minature camera that is activated when you arm the Taser, and is attached to the battery pack.

There is a civilian model out now, that is similar to the Law Enforcment model, but cycles at a much lower rate. However, you can depress the trigger numerous times, and the Taser will continue to fire, without you actually holding the trigger down. Each time you press the trigger, the memory holds that charge for 5 seconds. So, that mean you can shoot the Suspect, quickly press the trigger 5 times, set the Taser down on the ground, and run away. Meanwhile, the Suspect rides the lightning for 25 full seconds. The only downside is the Suspect has your Taser (still works for contact stun after cartrige is spent) after he recovers. But Taser International will ship you a new one if you have a copy of the Police Report. Also, the $1000.00 price tag is a bit steep as well for this model.

A regular stun gun is basically crap, so don't waste your time. Mace is probably a better option, just watch what kind you get. The Police use a brand called Freeze + P. Nasty stuff, and also contains an ultraviolet dye if viewed under a UV light.

Taser International is a brand name and stun gun is the general term used for any hand held device that projects electricity that incapacitates the nervous system. Both are safe if trained properly. Mace or pepper spray requires decontamination process (cleaning up usually by running cool water directly into the eyes) and a stun gun requires no decontamination. Once the stun or electricity has stopped the effect is stopped. I've been pepper sprayed and tasered and would take the taser over the pepper spray any day simply because when it's over it's over no muss no fuss. The thing to keep in mind when tasering someone is the surroundings. It is totally safe but the Fall is the most dangerous part of the taser. I've been tasered 4 times and in a controlled environment. My most serious injury has been a small (less than 1/8th of an inch) welt from the probe. I've been pepper sprayed twice and each time has required a 20 minute decontamination period and the spray has reactivated while in the shower. Most serious side effect is minimal burning.

As others have said, Taser is the name of a company and 'stun gun' is an product the uses electricity to incapacitate. The term stun gun is normally used for a device that must be placed in direct contact with the target. The products for which Taser Inc. is best known shoot leads into the target from a distance.

The stun gun must make direct contact with the attacker, but the taser can strike lodging probes in the clothing or skin of the attacker.

a taser shoots metal projectiles to lodge in a person to deliver the charge while a stun gun doesn't. any physical conflict carries risk, both personal and legal. to minimize risk you need to cultivate that inner voice that says, " get me the f#*&* out of here". try taking up a martial art that allows you practical experience at giving and taking pain. it's also a good idea to know the laws wherever you live. don't think that someone in the legal profession won't rake you over the coals just for defending yourself

STUN GUNS VS TASERS VS MACE

STUN GUNS: Stun guns use high voltage and low amperage to temporarily disable an attacker for several minutes. The stun gun does not rely on pain for results. The energy stored in the gun is dumped into the attacker's muscles causing them to do a great deal of work rapidly. This rapid work cycle instantly depletes the attacker's blood sugar by converting it to lactic acid. In short, he is unable to produce energy for his muscles, and his body is unable to function properly. The stun gun also interrupts the tiny neurological impulses that control and direct voluntary muscle movement. When the attacker's neuromuscular system is overwhelmed and controlled by the stun gun he loses balance. Should the attacker be touching you, the current will NOT pass to your body!

TASERS: Upon firing, compressed nitrogen projects two AIR TASER probes 15 feet at a speed of 135 feet per second. An electrical signal transmits throughout the region where the probes make contact with the body or clothing. The result is an instant loss of the attacker’s neuromuscular control and any ability to perform coordinated action. AIR TASER uses an automatic timing mechanism to apply the electric charge. The AIR TASER releases an electric current in a pre-set time sequence (an initial seven seconds followed by several 1.8 second breaks for a total time of about 30 seconds in each cycle). This cycle ensures that the nervous system of the target does not recover instantly to allow him to remove the probes. The follow-on bursts disrupt the process of re-equilibration of the nervous system. While the target is disabled, the user can place the device on the ground and escape.

In addition- Tasers are generally 10X more expensive then an Air Tasers and you have to buy additional cartridges that run at least $20 each-

MACE/PEPEPR SPRAY:
About Pepper Spray: Pepper Spray, now widely used by law enforcement, is an effective alternative to lethal force. It overcame the weaknesses of CS and CN gas. Pepper Spray, when used properly, works instantaneously, with no delay, and the assailant is blinded and disabled for about 45 minutes. Studies have shown that pepper spray is about 60 times more effective than CS or CN gas. The active ingredient is derived from hot peppers and is mixed into a carrier liquid and propelled with a propellant gas.

All Pepper Sprays Are Not the Same: Hot Peppers are measures on the Scoville Heat Unit scale or SHU's. Bell Peppers are about zero SHU. Jalapeno peppers are about 5,000 SHU's. Cayenne peppers are about 100,000 SHU's, and finally Habanera peppers come in at a whopping 300,000 SHU's. The peppers are crushed and condensed down to create the active ingredient for pepper spray. Don't be deceived by a high OC #. This only means the percentage of oil of pepper. It has nothing to do with the heat rating or SHU of the spray. Some pepper sprays don't even list a heat rating and are made from weak peppers. You might as well spray the assailant with salad dressing. Our Sprays that we offer are derived from the hottest Habanera and Scotch bonnet peppers and test out at 2 million SHU's, the most powerful you can get!

Which Spray Is Right For You? Most women that are attacked, have their car keys in their hands, according to statistics. So, we recommend the keyring units for most. For home and other security applications, the larger units provide greater volume of spray, greater distance, and more variety of spray patterns.

Cones/Foggers: Sprays are very effective and give a wide angle shot which will not require a high accuracy of firing.

Stream: Units shoot a little further and don't blow in the wind as much.

Foam: Units are for indoor applications where you might be concerned about fumes spreading to others.

A Stun gun is preferred and more than adequate for personal self defense.

STAY SAFE!!!!

Taser is a brand name. It launches electrode probes a certain distance. Stun guns must be used at point blank range.

Tazer International is a brand name. Stun gun is the general term associated with an intermediate weapon that uses electricity.

Both Mace and Tazers are safe to use with proper training. Mace blinds and sometimes incapacitates, but it is very easy to spray yourself. Tazers are great at incapacitating, though not always effective.

Both are usually appeals for things you ask for selfishly or ought to take care of yourself. The Lottery costs you a around 70 cents for each dollar of return on the long term, and it has only materialistic benefits. Prayer doesn t cost you anything, the results are based on the request s agreement with the perfect divine plan, and it can have eternal benefits. The Lottery will break your bank account, but investing in prayer builds your heavenly account -- if you have accepted the deposit that s waiting to take you out of the red.
