I got the shot yesterday afternoon, but my shoulder still hurts to move or touch. How long should this last? Is there any reason for concern?

Hi Frannie,

I'm sorry it hurts, I asked your very question about a year ago, I got a shot that hurt so bad, it was awful. If they put it in the muscle it takes awhile to feel better, mine took about 5 days, it swelled all up, turned red, throbbed and the skin was hot to the touch, the dr office said that happens sometimes, never happened to me with them before but I guess I never had it in a muscle before either. Ice it and take advil to make it feel better. If you can lightly massage it, that helps too.

A tetanus shot is one that has to be given in the muscle of your arm. Yes, it does hurt. It can hurt anywhere from 3-4 days & be tender if you lay on it or bump it. But what you're experiencing is normal. Then it's good for the next 7 yrs. At least it's not something you have to get every year anyway. That's the good news!

I have had two tetanus shots. The first hurt a lot for 3-4 days. The second didn't hurt at all.

Tetanus shots hurt like hell. I got one right after Hurricane Katrina and my arm and shoulder stayed sore nearly a week. The pain and soreness seemed to be worse on the third day after the shot, and gradually faded after a few days.
