So many people including myself have an eating disorder. So why do so many people think its humorous to make fun of or imitate people with eating disorders?

I lived with someone with an eating disorder, and it was no laughing matter. They can be very life threatening if it gets out of control. For most people with eating disorders, there is some psychologically damaged component that is at the root of the problem, most often very low self-esteem and hence body image issues.

The person I lived with had exactly these things. She was often criticized when she was young by her father for how she looked, as well as many other things he felt she wasn't up to his standards on. These things were never resolved, so she would take certain things in her life to extremes, such as going to the gym for four hours at a time, or taking her body into a state of anorexia. For my part, she would not allow me to talk to her about it or make any suggestions about diet or exercise. Every word I mentioned about diet or exercise was taken as a criticism or insult, no matter how gentle or tangential I was about it, or even if it wasn't referring to her.

So, most people just don't have an appreciation of the potential severity of eating disorders and how it can haunt people all their lives. These issues can be so deep-seated and ingrained that some may never get over it, but just try to deal with it the best they can.

I think some people fail to see it as an actual illness, they think that people choose to be that way. I don't make fun of people with eating disorders but I have to admit that recently I was judgmental about a lady who appears to have an eating disorder. I see this lady around all the time and she is so extremely skinny and I was just thinking to myself that she looked really awful and I was really unsympathetic towards her. But the other day I heard her laughing at something and I realized that she's human and has feelings too and I felt ashamed for judging her. If she does have an eating disorder then I do not have the right do judge her for that, I have no idea what her life is like. Nobody does so we should all remember that when we judge someone based on something like an eating disorder.

Some people have absolutely no sense of compassion or empathy. They'll make fun of anyone who's different from them. Truthfully, they're the pathetic people, not the people they make fun of. It's really sad to see. People make fun of people with all kinds of disabilities. I link to believe in Karma, that they'll get what they deserve in the end. I hope you're able to ignore them and go on with getting help for your disorder so you can get your life back. Good luck, sweetie!

remember women need atleast 2000 calories a day to be healthy, and it sounds like you are usually eating about a quarter of that. the fat foods will only make you put on wieght and feel gloomy. so dont binge, eat a a few small meals a day just start at that id swap the fatty sugary foods for real food, remember these foods didnt use to exist untill man could make food. and its all for profit, not for health. eat veg, fruit, meat, ocassionaly some sugar and drink alot of water youll be healthy and your weight for your height is probably alot less than it should be you know id recomend putting on atleast another 5 pounds.

It's hard to explain what makes people jerks, but they're out there. They are either trying to hide their own issues or have never had an issue that they've been made fun of for. In other words, they have no sympathy

this is not how I feel but in general people look down on those with eating disorders as this illness is something that is completely self-inflicted so there is no sympathy felt and sometimes even hostility towards those with the illness.

Many reasons...
They are insecure.
They don't know the severity (how can they?)
A LOT of people say that they have an eating disorder just for attention.
That's just how it is...

People are cruel to say the least. I know a lot of people who laugh at people too heavy or too thin. Why don't people concentrate on something positive to say instaed of putting people down as no one is perfect.
