Do like my ex-Ol' Man: Join the Marines, keep your ears open & your mouth SHUT in Boot Camp, and, if you're good enough (HE WAS), volunteers for RECON when you graduated!

My kid brother and I were competitive shooters since high school. My brother enlisted and I had plans to enlist, but due to the fact I am 20/200 in one eye after an accident at the metal forming shop I work for disqualified me from service.
On the other hand, my brother is an excellent shot. He has Expert Qualification Badge for both Rifle and Machine Gun.
He has been considering this position:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_Squad_Designated_Marksman_Rifle
but he prefers the M-2 heavy machine gun on the HUMVEE at this time, as he doesn't like to walk.
Anyhow, he was a great shot before he joined, but the armed forces have a way of helping you go further.
If you want to be a sniper, the only person you can work for is the military, maybe law enforcement. If all you mean is become a good shot, these people can help...

If my dad were a young man again he would definitely take you snipe hunting.

It is a sport that is a real side bursting fun.

Hope you find someone to teach you and enjoy the good time all will have.

Watch ultra realistic depictions of the craft in films such as "Enemy at the Gates".

Basically to learn long range shooting, there are certain principles you need to consider, but for the most part it is practice. To land shots at very long ranges you have to consider factors like wind which wouldn't make much of a difference in "combat" ranges like 100 meters or so.

Just buy a good .308 rifle and high quality optics and start practicing. After a while if you want to, and really get into long range shooting, you can buy something even more attuned to that kind of practice, such as a .338 Lapua rifle, or other big calibres.

The Marine Corps has an excellent program so to quote a poem by John Wayne entitled: "The Sky"

"The sky is blue the grass is green, so get off you butt and become a Marine"

There's absolutely no reason to do so unless it's your MOS, in which case the question will be answered for you. Take up one of the shooting sports instead, why don't you?
